About Me

I would say that I am curious, vivacious, gregarious, sometimes funny, intelligent, easy going, very passionate about the things I love, caring, thoughtful, and kind. Maybe that is a little over the top, but I think you can count on me to be very honest. LOL

Beer Bread

Photo from our last visit!

There are some restaurants you visit because you love the food, and then there are those restaurants where you find yourself looking forward to that one special thing they bring to the table.

For me, that would be the beer bread at Hug-Hes!

Oh, my goodness! If you've ever eaten at Hug-Hes, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about. That delicious bread served with whipped butter and their wonderful strawberry spread. Sometimes it's the simplest things that leave the biggest impression.

I've always thought there was something special about a warm loaf of homemade bread. The smell drifting through the kitchen, the anticipation of that first slice, and of course, a little butter melting into every bite.

And isn't that what comfort food is all about?

Well, today I've decided to bring a little of that Hug-Hes goodness into my own kitchen!

I have my recipe ready, and I'm hoping to recreate that wonderful bread we enjoy so much. The kind that's perfect alongside a big bowl of homemade soup, a Sunday dinner, or simply enjoyed warm from the oven.

Of course, I think we'll need a little strawberry spread to go along with it. After all, that's part of what makes Hug-Hes beer bread so special!

So, here's to simple recipes, favorite restaurants, and the fun of trying to recreate a little something we love right in our own kitchens.

Now, let's get baking!

My Hug-Hes Inspired Beer Bread Recipe

  • Prep time: 10 minutes
  • Cook time: 50–55 minutes
  • Yield: 1 loaf (6 large restaurant-style slices)

The Specific Beer to Use

Use a 12 oz can of a crisp, sweet domestic lager. The ideal options are Bud Light, Coors Banquet, or Miller Lite. These macro-lagers have a high adjunct corn/rice profile that lends a gentle sweetness and zero bitter hop residue when baked. Not that I know this on a personal level, but so I have heard!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (Sifted or spooned and leveled—do not scoop directly from the bag!)
  • 4 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon fine salt
  • ½ cup granulated white sugar (This exact amount yields that true restaurant sweetness)
  • 1 can (12 oz) Bud Light, Coors Banquet, or Miller Lite (At room temperature)
  • ½ cup (1 stick) salted butter, melted

Step-by-Step Instructions

1.   Prep the Oven and Pan: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a standard 9x5-inch metal loaf pan with baking spray.

2.   Combine the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, vigorously whisk together the sifted flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until completely blended and free of clumps.

3.   Add the Beer: Pour the entire 12 oz can of room-temperature lager into the dry mix.

4.   Stir Gently (The Secret Step): Using a wooden spoon or silicone spatula, stir the mixture just until the flour streaks disappear. Stop stirring immediately. The batter will look thick, lumpy, and slightly ugly. Overmixing activates the gluten, turning a light loaf into a dense brick.

5.   Transfer and Butter Crust: Spoon the lumpy batter into your prepared loaf pan, leveling the top slightly with your spatula. Pour all ½ cup of melted salted butter directly and evenly over the raw batter. (It will look like a lake of butter floating on top—this is exactly what you want).

6.   Bake: Place the pan on the center rack of your oven. Tip: Place a baking sheet on the rack below it just in case any butter bubbles over the edges. Bake for 50 to 55 minutes until the top is deeply golden brown, craggy, and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

7.   Cool and Slice: Let the bread rest in the pan for 10 minutes to absorb any remaining butter pooling on the edges. Remove it from the pan and let it cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes before slicing.

 Strawberry Spread

Now, we can't talk about Hug-Hes Beer Bread without mentioning that wonderful strawberry spread!

If you've ever enjoyed their beer bread, you know it's not just about the bread. It's the combination of a thick, warm slice, a little whipped butter, and that sweet strawberry goodness that makes it so special.

And the best part? We can make a delicious version right at home!

Homemade Strawberry Spread

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup good-quality strawberry jam or preserves

  • ½ cup whipped cream cheese or marshmallow fluff

Directions:

Whip the strawberry preserves and cream cheese (or marshmallow fluff) together until light, smooth, and fluffy.

That's it! Two simple ingredients and you have a lovely strawberry spread to enjoy with your homemade beer bread.

A Little Kitchen Tip: Cream cheese gives the spread a rich, slightly tangy flavor, while marshmallow fluff makes it sweeter and more like a dessert topping.

Serve your beer bread slightly warm, cut into thick slices, with whipped butter and a generous spoonful of strawberry spread.

Because sometimes, it's those little extras that make a recipe worth remembering!

Enjoy every delicious bite!
