Life of Pi Survivor of 227 Days at Sea

Life of Pi (2001with so many glorious reviews it took me years to finally pick up a copy and read!)  How do you begin to summaries a story that is filled with tragedy, hope, and faith in the same sentence?  Simply put, it is a very fascinating tale about an attempt to survive on a lone lifeboat in the Pacific – the strength it takes to carry on, persevering through the boredom, unquenchable thirst, the sheer terror of being trapped with a dangerous animal, and constantly being afraid of making the wrong move, which may result in your sudden death. It was extremely  uncomfortable to read at times – can’t imagine getting to the point of eating an animals feces!  In a novel where not a lot ‘happens’, everything is heightened. I both could and couldn’t possibly imagine Pi’s desperate, burdensome circumstances.

This was not one of my favorite novels, and I find myself wondering what I must be missing that so many people have rated this a classic.   There is plenty I could enjoyed telling other people about: his survival (I feel I have learned a lot), Richard Parker, Pi’s childhood – which because of the pronunciation of his name made me wonder if that was more troubling than the events on the life boat…I”m sensitive like that!   There are so many unexpected twists and turns, from the very beginning of the story to the interview with the Japanese investigators.  I couldn’t help but find him an endearing character, quite a feat when he’s really the only character.

Two themes were relevant to what I took away from the story the first being how antagonist and protagonist perceive life for animals in a zoo…after reading the story I will go with the protagonist. These words are spoken by Pi early in Part One, at the end of chapter 4, after a long discussion of zoo enclosures. Mr. Patel, Pi has recently told us, runs the Pondicherry Zoo, a place that Pi considered paradise as a boy. Pi has heard many people say negative things about zoos—namely that they deprive noble, wild creatures of their freedom and trap them in boring, domesticated lives—but he disagrees. Wild animals in their natural habitat encounter fear, fighting, lack of food, and parasites on a regular basis. Given all these biological facts, animals in the wild are not free at all—rather, they are subject to a stringent set of social and natural laws that they must follow or die. Since animals are creatures of habit, zoo enclosures, with abundant food and water, clean cages, and a constant routine, are heaven for them. Given the chance, Pi says, most zoo animals do not ever try to escape, unless something in their cage frightens them.   Makes sense to me!

Theme two is about fear…which there was plenty of in this book…Here are the words again spoken by Pi on the subject - “I must say a word about fear. It is life's only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous adversary, how well I know. It has no decency, respects no law or convention, shows no mercy. It goes for your weakest spot, which it finds with unnerving ease. It begins in your mind, always ... so you must fight hard to express it. You must fight hard to shine the light of words upon it. Because if you don't, if your fear becomes a wordless darkness that you avoid, perhaps even manage to forget, you open yourself to further attacks of fear because you never truly fought the opponent who defeated you.”

The moral of the story is pretty clear, and revealed at the end when Pi is forced to tell an alternate version of the story to Japanese investigators… with a sailor with a broken leg, a French cook, Pi, and Pi’s mother. Eventually, we realize that the zebra is the sailor, the hyena is the cook, and the orangutan is Pi’s mother, and the tiger, Richard Parker, is actually Pi. The details of cannibalism and savagery are gruesome. Finally, Pi simply asks the author, “Which story do you prefer?”  Given the two versions…I will take the first!

Rainy Day Color

With rain falling we had to come up with an inside project today.   This was so fun especially when we added a drop of Dawn Dish Soap and watched the action!

All you need is:

• milk

• a toothpick or q-tip

• plate or shallow dish

• liquid food coloring drops

Our first swirl was made without any dish soap added.  It was fun to drag the q-tip through the colors and make a great design.

Next we dipped the q-tip in the dish soap and to our surprise and wonder…..look at that

great star!  One touch right in the middle of the drop of food coloring….walaaaa

and twirled it around to make a beautiful scene…….

Of course this could have gone on for many more attempts, but green was our very last time….we will definitely be doing this project again.  It had us held spell bound for almost 30 minutes, Little Man did not want to stop, “Let’s do it again!”

Notice the skids of the brand new Helicopter in the background that we can’t go anywhere without since the minute it was out of the package and put together!

Mini Pie Crust Sugar Cookies

My creative and talented cousin Lexy Buffo Ward is the inspiration for this delicacy today!

Her recipe was simple to follow and came together quickly in my kitchen this morning.  You can check out her wonderful blog at http://theproperpinwheel.com/     She really is amazing…..and I thank her for all the joy she has brought into our home with party ideas and recipes. 

Pie Crust Sugar Cookies watercolor

Ingredients:

  • 1c butter (softened)
  • 2 c flour
  • 1/2 c sour cream

Cream butter and flour together and then slowly add sour cream. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for a minimum of two hours. Once chilled, roll to 1/4″ thick. Using a small circular cutter (I used an old prescription bottle…), cut out tiny circles and place on a greased cookie sheet. Poke holes with a fork in the tops of cookies. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for 7 minutes and allow to cool!

Frosting:

  • 1/4 c butter (softened)
  • 1 c powdered sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • favorite flavor **Wild Orange Essential Oil ..1 drop did it!

Cream butter and powdered sugar together. Add egg yolk and vanilla and mix well. Drop one drop of your choice of food coloring and mix, mix, mix! Spread some frosting on the bottom of one cookie and sandwich it with another! Keep cookies chilled until ready to serve.

This made 18 sandwich cookies and I made the rest of the dough into a pie crust to be used for my favorite banana cream pie…you can check out that recipe here.

Maria von Trapp, the last surviving member of the seven original Trapp Family Singers, the vocal group made famous by the movie “The Sound of Music,” has passed away. She was 99 years old.
Von Trapp died at her home in Vermont on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
Maria was the third child and second-oldest daughter of Capt. Georg von Trapp and Agathe Whitehead von Trapp, his first wife, who died in 1922. He later married Maria von Trapp, who passed away in 1987.
In her autobiography “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers,” the elder Maria describes the younger one as “very delicate.” She writes “On account of her heart condition she had to be kept completely quiet.”
I am now reading Yesterday, Today, and Forever, which is the story of how she and her husband taught their children about the Savior.  I picked up this book after we watch The Sound of Music last month.  So glad I did!

My Indoor Garden

I am a lover of real plants.   I love having flowers and green things

around the home, there is a problem with this love affair……

their demise while taking up residence in my home!

to bring the luck into my home.  Only a shamrock can undo the

magical spell of a leprechaun.  Hope those little green men notice

our plant and leave only magical spells this year!

Chocolate Bird Nests

 

Chocolate Bird Nests

These sweet little chocolate bird nests are a perfect decoration and dessert for Easter.

Little Man is going to love helping us make these.

Serving size 4 bird nests

Ingredients:
  • 4 ounces milk chocolate
  • 1 cup small chow mein noodles
  • 12 small chocolate or malted egg shaped candy
Directions:
  1. Melt chocolate.
  2. Add chow mein noodles and stir to combine (if the mixture looks too loose, add some more noodles).
  3. Divide mixture into four parts, spoon onto parchment paper and shape into nest.
  4. Put little chocolate or malted eggs into nest and let the chocolate set up for about 30 minutes

And our new Jasmine plant has filled our room with an aroma that is quit unique….and since we can’t ever afford a bottle of Doterra Jasmine this one has really done wonders for our attitude!  The Fenton Glass was a gift from my parents many years ago.  Thank you Mom and Dad, this piece of glass brings back lots of love and memories from “Gift Fair”  our hometown family owned business.

We love living in “Aunt Julie’s Log Cabin”…and K thinks this is what we are talking about, he doesn’t really care if someone long ago had to live in a cabin without running water, electricity, and an indoor bathroom…he just knows that he loves his Aunt Julie’s Cabin.

This delightful story tells about how much Abraham Lincoln enjoyed reading and writing, and why these good habits are so very important. The author also introduces the topic of how we sometimes are forced to deal with bullies, and why it's important to stand up for what you believe in.


In addition, Brad Meltzer includes in this intriguing story why cheating is unfair, hurting animals is wrong, and doing the right thing will make you a better person. The story also teaches self-respect, and the true meaning of freedom, and justice for all.


This interesting story also discusses why slavery is wrong, and the Civil War is included in the story as it defines why it was important to fight for freedom, and end slavery, and the war. The author highlights that all men are created equal, why our voice is to be heard when something is wrong, and why injustice should not be allowed.  Love this book!

And so we end our salute to our 16th President…Happy Birthday Abraham Lincoln.

It is always nice to see a big smile when we are getting ready to go to school.   Today K was more than a little excited because he was going to give his friends treats we made.   He was also very happy because his jacket had been warmed up in the dryer before we started our trip on this drizzling rainy day!

Chicken Bundles

Chicken Bundles

Simple dinner tonight with Chicken Cordon Bleu Bundles

· 2 cans of  crescent rolls

· 1 package of thin sliced ham

·  slices of swiss cheese

·  2- 2 1/2 cups shredded cooked chicken

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Open the cans of crescent rolls. Separate and unroll the triangles.  Layer one slice of ham, 1 slice of cheese. Then add a small amount of shredded chicken on top.  Add another slice of ham on the top. Fold the edges of the ham around the cheese and chicken.   Starting at the fat end of the triangle, roll the crescent dough around all the fillings as tight as you can and continue rolling to the point of the triangle.

· Bake at 375 degrees for 18-20 minutes or until lightly browned.

· Brush with butter fresh out of the oven.

I Dig You

 

We finished up our Valentine Exchange for K this afternoon.  He is getting so exciting about the party his class is going to have this week.  He said he can’t wait to tell teacher about his treats. 

Valentines I Dig You Valentine’s are always kind of girly and we searched and search for just the right idea.   Aunt Julie made the tags on her fancy smanzie Silhouette machine, I ordered the little shovels on line, and Grandma bought the package of Skittles to finish off the project.

All the samples that we saw had the candy just in the bottom of the bag so it looked like you could really dig it up…but we weren’t sure that was such a good idea, so we left those Skittles in their manufactured packaging and tied it up with ribbon!

I Love, Love, Love holidays.  It gives me an excuse to do a little extra and have lots of fun at the same time.

Best Way to Start the Day

 
Shower OIls
Here are the oils I keep in the shower to use on a regular basis:

Balance: This blend from doTERRA contains spruce, rosewood, blue tansy, and frankincense and promotes a sense of balance and tranquility. It is my favorite oil to use in my daily showers.

Citrus: Uplifting and refreshing, citrus oils like grapefruit, lemon, and wild orange are the perfect way to start the day. Citrus oils are also known for their cleansing and disinfecting properties, making them a great choice for the shower. doTERRA also makes a blend called Citrus Bliss which contains a blend of citrus essential oils and vanilla bean extract and smells amazing.

Eucalyptus: This is my go-to oil for clearing up congestion and helping with breathing. If you ever have a cold or wake up feeling congested, drop a few drops of eucalyptus into your shower to clear it right up! It’s also got a great, refreshing scent which not only helps clear your sinuses, but your head as well.  DD uses this so often…that I must keep at least 2 extra bottle in stock! Every shower in our home has this one!

Frankincense: This amazing essential oil helps improve concentration, reduce irritability and impatience and is perfect for those mornings when you wake up on the wrong side of the bed. Frankincense also has great immune boosting properties and is one of my favorite scents.

Lavender: Well known for it’s relaxing and calming properties, lavender essential oil is a great choice for those days when you’re feeling anxious or for if you’re showering at night before bed. Lavender has been called the “swiss-army knife” of essential oils and can work wherever there is a need. So, if you’re not sure, go for lavender!

On-Guard:   This amazing essential oil is super anti-bacterial.  It’s a blend of Wild Orange, Clove bud, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary which smells like Christmas.  Also available from doTERRA are OnGuard protective throat lozenges and OnGuard hand soap.

Peppermint: For those days when you need help waking up, peppermint has a fresh, energizing scent and is known for stimulating the mind and helping with memory and mental performance.

Rosemary: This is the essential oil I add to my conditioner. Rosemary is known for strengthening hair and preventing hair loss. Rosemary is also helpful for fighting the cold and flu and has immune building properties.

Momma made Italian Soda


Delizioso – you know if you throw in an Italian Cream Soda the family feels like it’s a party…and that is just what it was tonight!  What was the occasion…..well it is opening ceremony night at Sochi.   Did someone say Sushi?  I’ll be right back with some!

And this Little Guy quickly figured out that the rim of the glass was covered with candy candy candy!

Ingredients

  • 3 oz club soda
  • 2 oz Raspberry flavored Torani syrup (or your favorite flavor)
  • 3 oz heavy cream or half and half
  • ice
  • crushed jolly ranchers for the rim of the glass

Instructions

  1. Coat the rim of the glass with crushed jolly ranchers – We just dip the cup in water and then into the crushed jolly ranchers.   Jolly Ranchers can be melted in the microwave if you want a smooth rim.
  2. Fill a tall glass two thirds full with ice.
  3. Fill the bottom half with cream
  4. Top off with club soda.
  5. Pour your flavoring on top
  6. Pop in the straw and drinks away.

The Kitchen House, historical Book Trailer, Kathleen Grissom

What an amazing book!  Truly, I couldn't stop listening as I had the audio version. I stayed up until the early hours of the morning because I had to finish this story.

 It’s been awhile since I have been that engrossed in a book, or one that I was  affected by a story for that matter. There aren’t words to describe the emotions I felt while reading this. 

This  author’s has a wonderful talent  of being able to tell a  grippingly beautiful tale of life on a southern plantation in the late 18th century, and for using just the right amount of words and didn't overdo it on the descriptive, she  just kept the pace of the story just so that it feels more like an action-packed thriller.   She also so cleverly evokes the story's time and place, that you the reader will virtually feel present as the the tale unfolds.  I felt like I had traveled in time and was living among these perfectly developed characters, yet so thankful that I wasn't. 

What I want to tell you above all is that this is a splendid, thought-provoking and touching story of amazingly(mostly) admirable people....there are a couple of really bad apples, yet the others who despite the tragedies that are happening in their lives, never lose heart.

Aside from the tragedies there is so much love and devotion in this story,  I will never forget Mama Mae and her family. Along with so many other characters that I actually had to make a family tree to reminded me who belonged to each family!

I will certainly recommend this book to any of my friends,
 because it is impossible not to be permanently touched by this novel.   Love this trailer...I do hope that it will be in movie theaters soon!




Homemade Foot Soak

For Christmas Jason & Brevin made amazing bath salts which we love love love.   Ali has been experiencing some tingling in her feet lately and so I decided to do some research for homemade foot soaks.   After lots of reading I found some that I’m really pleased with…..you know there is nothing like a relaxing foot soak at the end of a long day. 

This promises to be relaxing, soothing, a great detox, and and will release a great deal of stress.  

Here is what you will need:

  • 1 C.Epsom Salt

  • 1 C. Baking Soda

  • ⅓ C. Sea Salt

  • ⅓ C. Redmond Clay

Mix together the ingredients in a Quart jar. When you’re ready for your foot soak pour 1/4 C. of the mix into a tub of hot water (as hot as you can get without burning yourself). I like to put it into a small tub that just my feet fit it. Here’s the topper! Essential Oils! Add 3-4 drops of your favorite essential oil to the water.

The feet help the rest of your body feel good or bad. If you have sore feet, then you don't tend to walk tall, you slouch and you tire very easy. By soaking them, you will feel better quickly.

Keep soaking them until the water has cooled off, or at least 10 to 15 minutes. Then pat them dry, no need to rinse them. You skin will feel great.

  • Metal Cleanse – Cilantro

  • Relaxing – Lavender, Serenity, or Balance

  • Rejuvenating – Peppermint, Deep Blue, AromaTouch

  • Candida Cleanse – Melaleuca

Since Punxsutawney Phil called it Six more weeks of the white stuff ….it’s out we go to see if we can see our own shadow!   Sure enough there it is.
